Here we go...

Spencer ran down the stairs, two at the time, and landed with a loud thud in the dim lit basement, simply walking down a staircase wasn't an option and neither was it a preference for the girl rushing to gather the last of her things before setting off on her way to college.

The idea of a brand new start with new people excited her as much as it saddened her at the thought of leaving most of her friends; some who wouldn't be continuing with their studies any further and some who were going to various different colleges. She was lucky to have a few of her friends starting this new journey with her whom without this whole process would seem a whole lot daunting. The idea of new adventures, experiences and friends exhilarated her beyond mere words.

Spencer was never completely certain that she would be enrolling to a college that far away from her home town and that far away form her mum. Leaving her mum behind never occurred to her when Spencer was busy showing her the Winston College brochure, specialising in music and sports. Their music programme more than thrilled her and her mum, Melody, could tell from the gleam in her daughters eyes skimming the pages in sheer excitement the day she rushed from school one afternoon.

Melody knew one day her daughter would leave her next and venture out on her own to go to college and live life, however the mere thought of Spencer moving out made knots in her stomach. So checking out the colleges full programmes on the website and questioning about the details of the entire courses, Melody gave her approval. If her daughter was leaving to study, she'd make sure that the college is fit for her potential and extraordinary talent that her beautiful daughter possessed.

Coughing irritably, Spencer closed the box before more specks of dust could be disturbed. She heaved a dramatic sigh before opening the last of the box tucked away in the far corner of the basement. She promised herself mentally that if those music books were not in there she would scream the place down.

Spencer saved her voice for later as she smiled triumphantly down at the books, which once belonged to her mum; ' maybe these will help me become half as good as mum', Spencer thought to herself. She moved her hand across the spine of the books with a smile when beneath her finger tips the hard spine changed into something softer, something of the touch of leather.

Cursing softly under her breath, at the dim light she reached for the leather object to discover a notebook. She walked to the foot of the stairs hoping for a ray or two of light from above as she turned the front cover. In the centre of the first page '1995' was printed in bold black and aboveboard the right top corner lay a lazy, careless squiggle ' Melody Pavane'. Surrounding the year was coloured in love hearts and a name, 'Lydian Tallis'.

Lydian Tallis??

Spencer stood there for a moment frowning at the name and the hearts in deep thought, when a voice broke through,
"James is here, hurry on up, Spencer!". At the voice of her mum any previous thought of leather notebooks evaporated as she hastily placed the book back inside the box and bounded up the stairs hoisting the box up with both hands.

Melody stood in front of a very excited looking James as she waited for Spencer to reemerge from the basement. It made her wonder what on earth kept her this quiet when quiet and slow wasn't part of her vocabulary. Oh God if she broke something!

She probably broke something...

Not the glass piano showpiece! She did hear a faint thud before but not a shatter
though. Then she broke something else.
But she couldn't find herself getting vexed with her daughter even for this crime. Instead she felt deep affection for her wild, impatient, spontaneous daughter and wondered what sort of havoc the new college has to face.

Not that Spencer was deliberately bad, no, she knew that wasn't the case; Spencer just couldn't keep her words to herself at untimely moments. Well, especially at those moments... In fact Spencer reminded Melody a lot of herself even now when she tried hard to keep it at bay.

Spencer and James carried the rest of the boxes to the the backseat of the red car parked in the doorway and James knew he should give the mother and daughter some time alone before they depart. So he aimlessly circled his car pretending to keep busy whilst finding it hard to contain his excitement. All their childhood James and Spencer had planned in detail how they'll go to college together and live all by themselves without a care in the world and that's actually becoming a reality!

Realising that he's grinning like a maniac, James decided to wait inside the car, when he felt a hard slap on his back followed by Spencer's words,
"you look like an idiot James, close your mouth".

He could feel her smirking even without turning around and muttered a tiny 'shut up' as he too started smiling taking his seat in the drivers seat. But Spencer, being Spencer, shoved him to the side and beat him to it looking triumphant whilst clutching the wheel declaring,
"I'm driving!".

James heard Melody's soft laugh and saw her shake her head gently from the corner of his eyes at Spencer's stunt, as he admitted defeat and sat next to her in the car.

Spencer grinned at her sulking Friend.

"Ready James?"

With this, James looked up and said
"let's go", abandoning his mood and shining a smile which he could not restrain.

With a final wave, Spencer drove out of the driveway and didn't look back once.
