Riley's POV:As I woke, I felt a huge pain in my side. Completely unaware of why it was hurting I looked into the mirror, lifting my shirt up, my whole side was black and bruised. I touched my side and the littlest touch began to hurt. As I was looking into the mirror, contemplating how on earth this happened, as I could not recall the events of last night, probably due to the alcohol, I heard a concerned screech from my mom. I dropped my t-shirt immediately, hiding my bruised side. My face wasn't that easy to hide though, with the black eye visible. My mom looked at me in shock, hopefully she didn't see my side.
"RILEY THOMAS MCDONOUGH, WHAT ON EARTH?! WHO DID THAT TO YOU?" My mom shouted, waking everyone else up in the house.
"You should have seen the other guy" I joked, but then realising how much my face actually hurt I quivered holding my face within seconds.
"Ouch".
Connor swiftly walks past my bedroom, whilst my mom is still stood in awe looking at my face. She slowly walks over, wiping her thumb on my cheek, "my poor baby, how did this even happy Riley, this isn't how we brought you up McDonough". Connor looked in, pulling an awkward face at me, as I struggled to come up with something. Mom clocked on and turned to Connor who started to pace down the hallway."Connor Patrick McDonough get back here!"
"Hi mom!" He nervously replied, high pitched almost as how a child would when they got into trouble and tried to hide it.
"What do you know about this?" Mom looked at him angrily. I signalled to Connor not to mention anything. He followed my lead.
"I can't say I do" he replied, looking anxious. Our eyes looking back and fourth at one another. Did she buy it. "Apart from the fact his face looks like an oompa loopa" he sniggered. I gave him a look to say too far man.
"That's enough Connor, you may leave. Riley did you get into a fight or something"
"I guess you could say that". I frowned at her.
"Let's get you some frozen peas on that" she insisted leaving my room to go get the peas.
Connor's POV:
Toby was stood in the kitchen, pouring himself a bowl of lucky charms, when I swooped past by him, "aww Toby you shouldn't have" stealing his cereal. "Hey their mine, get your own breakfast" he spat back. By this time I had sat down in the living room and began watching Netflix.
Riley came downstairs looking in a lot of pain, placing his lifeless dead beat body on the sofa. "Wanna get that checked out" I turned to Riley who suddenly snapped out of his thoughts and turned towards to me. "I'm sure it's nothing, my face will heal". I began to think to myself how is he in so much pain, but yet won't go and get it checked out. He couldn't be in so much pain and not be hurting elsewhere? Surely. Is there more to his injury than he told me about. My trail of thoughts were interrupted when a knock at the door occurred. "I'll get it you stay there, rest". I pointed towards Riley.
Riley's POV:
As Connor went to answer the door I tried to reach my phone off the table, but as Connor returned he startled me and I managed to fall off the sofa onto the floor."It's for you loser, Amelia's brother, Adam" he said in a monotone voice. Replacing his body on the sofa. I jumped up, hurting myself even more, but tried to play it off. "Adam, what can I do for you?" I asked curious as to how he knew where I lived and why he was stood in my hallway.
"Amelia's progressing, maybe you should come and see her" he said bluntly, before suggesting I went with him. I got dressed, slipping on my black jeans, with a baseball t-shirt. I grabbed my phone and keys before telling Connor I'd be back later. He nodded and I followed Adam down the driveway to his car.
About 15 minutes later, we arrived at the hospital, walking to where Amelia was, I began to have flashbacks about what happened the last time we saw one another, when she was storming out of the store to get as far away as she could from me. The crash. And especially the part which broke me so much. The part where she repeatedly asked for her 'boyfriend Brett'. I clenched my fists just thinking about him. I snapped out of the flashback when we got to Amelia.
"I'll give you a minute" Adam said going to grab a coffee from the crappy coffee machine, that pretty much all hospitals have. Coffee that takes like sour milk. "Thanks".
There she was lay looking as though she was peacefully asleep, hooked up to a number of machines, one that measured her heartbeat, her pulse and one with a cannula, that was placed in her arm, which would drip occasionally. I held her hand, with a firm tight grip. I couldn't lose her. Not now. The room was silent and smelt of disinfectant and flowers left by loved ones. I couldn't help but think this was all my fault. If I hadn't have made her want to rush off.
Suddenly, I felt a twitch of her hand. She turned to look towards me, fluttering her eyes open. "Riley, what happened?"
"To you or me?" I replied. "Well both" she replied with little breath. "Hey if it hurts don't speak, I'll explain, I tried to speak to you that day in the supermarket but you was having none of it and left in a rush, you had a car crash as a result, Brett was who you crashed with. I on the other hand, had a little difficulty with your so called boyfriend Brett, but I'm fine, honest".
"I need to apologise, this was all my fault". I started to stroke her cheek with my thumb.
"Look --" I began before she cut me off. "Riley, I'm so sorry for everything. All I do is cause you harm, you get hurt because of me". She looked down at her palms, twiddling her thumbs. She couldn't bear to look at me.
"That's not true Amelia, I love you so much to just easily give up on you" I reassured her holding her hands in mine, which suddenly became clammy. "Maybe you should, I'm just a disappointment and get you hurt, I mean look at your face Riley, it's clear it wasn't an accident".
"Yeah, well I guess I had that coming" I pulled a half smile at her. "Brett can't know that you've been here" she said worried. "Why, what's going on with you two?" She turned away, and just bluntly replied "it's nothing, he just can't know". She then fell back asleep, therefore I headed home.
